We get asked to create headshots on location quite often and one of my first questions is about the background and where on property are the images going to be created. If the location is for outdoors, I do that for several reasons, first, so I can google map the location and secondly to check sun angles at different times of day with the desired background. Getting the right time of day long with the right angle and direction of the photo is important to avoid distractions in the background.
If the location is indoors (typically their business) has areas that can be used, I'll either go by to see the options or ask if they can send a cell phone shots so I can plan accordingly. I like it when we can use the existing interior for several reasons:
- The background can tie in with the brand or business
- The background will be unique to that business and can easily be replicated
- If the background chosen is not what we want to see in detail, I simply set the camera where the it is more blurred giving more focus to the person.
- The background can tell about the person or what they do without any text.
Looking at some of the images below, you can almost tell where they work, what they do or their field of expertise simply based on the background.
